Virginia Ann (Wilcoxen) "Ginny" Thompson
May 4, 1940 - May 26, 2023
Virginia Thompson of Botkins, OH, has died. She was 83.
Ginny's parents were Frederick and Margaret Wilcoxen, late of Botkins, Ohio. She is survived by a brother, Charles (Ruth) Wilcoxen, of North Madison, Ohio. She was a devoted wife to James W. "Jim" Thompson; mother to Brad and Therese Reed (Troy, OH); John and April Reed (Huntsville OH), Tom and Debbie Reed (Dublin OH), and Jim and Ginny Thompson III (Lima OH). Ginny was delighted to be grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother to an extended family too broad and diverse to name here.
Despite a late start, or perhaps because of it, Ginny was passionately devoted to education. As a single mother of three teenage boys (at the time) she earned her bachelor's degree from The Ohio State University and Master of Education degree from the University of Dayton. The fourth, fifth and sixth grade students she mentored throughout her 25-year teaching career at Anna Local Schools number into the hundreds. Her influence extended to her professional colleagues as well. She was a faculty leader, a member of the Retired Teachers group, and a member of the American Association of University Women. She was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society.
She remained active in retirement as a volunteer and a leader of a number of organizations. She was a member of the Shelby County Democrat Women and volunteered at the Neil Armstrong Air & Space Museum, and contributed to a number of progressive causes.
Ginny is remembered by family and friends for her generosity, kindness, curiosity and intellect. An insatiable reader and book lover, she could not pass a bookstore without exploring, and frequently purchased books to share with others.
A Celebration of Life ceremony will be scheduled for Ginny's friends and loved ones at a time and place to be determined. In lieu of flowers, Ginny's family kindly requests that donations be made to Save the Children at support.savethechildren.org or the American Red Cross at www.redcross.org.
