Stephen "Steve" Butterfield Obituary

STEPHEN "STEVE" RUSSELL BUTTERFIELD, 71, of Port Jefferson, passed away at 7:20 A.M. Friday, September 20, 2024 at Ohio’s Hospice of Miami County. He was born on May 13, 1953 in Sidney, Ohio, the son of the late Warren S. and Dorothy M. (Henman) Butterfield.

On November 27, 1983 he married the former Paula A. Dorsey, who survives him along with two children, Dustin W. (Chasity) Butterfield of Port Jefferson, and Victoria J. (Seth) Birkemeier of Quincy; four grandchildren, Bentley, Abigail, Shelby and Landen; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Marlene Berryman, Tim Dorsey, Lisa (John) Christman, Susan McMaster, Mike Dorsey and Jenny Larger; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Karen Zwiebel.

Steve retired from Wilson Memorial Hospital after 23 years, where he last worked in medical records. Many know that Steve was a man whose heart belonged to the Village of Port Jefferson. For over 31 years, he devoted himself to the community as its mayor, serving seven of those years on the village council. His leadership extended far beyond the mayor’s office, including 25 years with the Port Jefferson Fire Department, where he spent 23 years as its respected chief. As a founding member of the Perry Port Salem Rescue, Steve’s dedication to helping others was unmatched.

His passion for his community was equally evident in his work. Steve was the former owner of the Stop 47 Inn, but many will fondly remember him as the welcoming face behind the former Hussey’s Restaurant, a beloved landmark in Port Jefferson.

When not serving the village, Steve’s greatest joy was spending time with his family. He cherished every moment, finding any excuse to gather with those he loved. Weekend lunches and family gatherings were among his favorite pastimes, but nothing brought him more happiness than time spent with his grandchildren. Steve’s legacy of service, love, and dedication will forever live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the community he so deeply cared for.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, September 25, 2024 at 10:30 AM at Glen Cemetery with Pastor David Clem officiating. Arrangements are in the care of Cromes-Edwards Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Ohio's Hospice of Miami County in Steve’s memory. Condolences may be expressed to the family at, www.cromesfh.com
