SHIRLEY ANN HAWKINS, 86, of Fletcher received her promise of everlasting life in Christ on Wednesday, October 11, 2023 as she took her last breath from this earth. She was born at home on January 12, 1937 in Port Jefferson, Ohio, the daughter of the late Virgil D. Scherer and Agnes (Kinninger) Scherer Bumgardner. On October 17, 1953 she married Richard E. Hawkins at the Port Jefferson Methodist Church in Port Jefferson, Ohio. Richard preceded her in death on July 5, 2009.
Shirley is survived by two daughters, Melinda (John) Henry of Tallmadge, OH, and Marcia Leiss of Fletcher, who was her caregiver for many years. She has four grandchildren, Ronni (Kevin) Schaack of Uniontown, OH, Nathan Morris of Maryland, Wayne (Angie) Leiss of Fletcher, and Michael (Carla) Leiss of Versailles. Shirley also has eleven great-grandchildren, Alec Schaack, Natalie Morris, Lily Morris, Abigail Leiss, Carter Leiss, Breanna Leiss, Dylan Leiss, Andrea Leiss, Ryan Leiss, Cayla Leiss, and Xavier Leiss, all whom she loved so very much. She was preceded in death by her brother, Dale Scherer, and her stepfather, Gordon Bumgardner.
Shirley was a graduate of Sidney High School. In her teenage years, she worked at the GC Murphy Company in Sidney. After her children arrived, she was a homemaker, a very hard worker and a wonderful mother to her daughters. She loved to garden, clean house, fish, sew, crochet, cook, can and watch her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of Union Baptist Church of Troy, Ohio for many years.
2TIM 4:7 “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” LORD, we will miss Mom dearly and look forward to the day when we will be reunited in Your presence with her. Bless Your Holy Name.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 17, 2023 at 11 A.M. at Union Baptist Church in Troy with Pastor Bill Berkheiser officiating. Burial will follow at Fletcher Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday from 4 to 7 P.M. at Cromes-Edwards Funeral Home, 302 S. Main Ave. in Sidney.
