Phoebe Stayton died at her home of nearly sixty-five years in Sidney on December 7. She was 96.
Born Phoebe Ann Turner in West Manchester, Ohio on July 4,1928 to Belle (Kessler) and Lynn Turner, she was the youngest in a family of seven children. Five brothers and a sister predeceased her. Growing up in a large and close-knit family during the Depression and World War II formed her character and provided good memories for a lifetime. She loved being around family and friends and she was practical and thrifty to the core. In high school she met Jack Stayton, of the neighboring village of Eldorado, and they married in 1950 and moved to Sidney for his job at Monarch Machine Tool. There she became a homemaker and mother. The marriage lasted for over seventy-one years, until his death in 2021. They often thought and acted as one. They had two sons, Kevin, who survives, and Stanley, who died in 2018. She took particular delight in her grandson, Taylor, Stanley's son, who also survives. In addition, she is survived by many nieces and nephews, and daughter-in-law Candie Stayton, as well as friends and care givers.
Although increasingly frail, she remained sharp and active until the end and only a few days before her death she was out with a helper to buy a Christmas tree. It was her fervent wish to remain at home until she died and it was a wish fulfilled, after a long and good life. Many will miss her.
