Melvin Ryan, Jr. Obituary

MELVIN A. RYAN, JR., 91, of Sidney, passed away at 9:14 PM Sunday, January 18, 2026 at Wilson Health. He was born on August 27, 1934 in Piqua, Ohio, the son of the late Melvin and Minnetta (Phillipi) Ryan.

On August 24, 1964 he married the former Shirley Edwards, who survives along with eleven children, Shonda (Dave) Jackson of Florida, Rick (Sheri) Ryan, Tammie (Jim) Skikus, Lenna (Rick) Boggs, Greg (Nancy) Ryan, Wava (Frank) Young, all five of Ohio, David (Rhonda) Ryan of Arkansas, Gigi (Ray) Stager of Alabama, Kevin (Maurya) Ryan, Brent (Sandy) Ryan, and Kent Ryan, all three of Ohio. Also surviving are 26 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren, and one sister, Nancy Huges. He is preceded in death by three siblings, Bill (Whitney) Ryan, Judy Anderson, and Mary Fries.

Melvin loved all sports, but baseball held a special place in his heart. He was an avid Cincinnati Reds fan, especially during the era of the legendary Big Red Machine. While raising his family, Melvin devoted countless hours to coaching Piqua boys baseball teams, and to many he was simply known as “Coach.” He was also a dedicated career truck driver, spending 32 years with Continental Express, a profession he truly loved.
