Mark Douglas Cottrel, 68, Pemberton, passed away peacefully September 16, 2022 at St. Rita's Memorial Hospital, Lima, Ohio after a long battle with throat cancer.
Born in Sidney on March 21, 1954, Mark was the fourth child of William Douglas, and Patricia Jean (Protsman) Cottrel, who preceded him in death.
He is survived by his son Mark William (Christi Heath) Cottrel, Sidney; daughter Rusti Leigh (Brent) Wilker, St. Mary's, and a grandson Brayden Ritchie, St. Mary's.
Survivors also include his siblings; William R.( Pam) Cottrel, Enon; Polly Ann Cottrel, Conover; Robbin J. Roberts, Cherryvale, KS; Cindy J. (Randy) Jackson, DeGraff; and Uncle Lowell (Jo) Ford, Dayton. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
After graduating from Fairlawn High School where he played basketball, track and ran cross country, he attended Wright State University.
His first job as a teen was for mowing cemetery and roads for Perry Township. Additionally he worked for a short time at Monarch trucking before finding an outdoor career much more to his liking.
Before his illness Mark had retired from the Shelby County Highway Department, where he had been a heavy equipment operator most of his life. He enjoyed building bridges and the challenge of snow removal.
Additionally from his teen years until his father, Auctioneer "Dollar Bill" Cottrel, retired around 2000, Mark assisted with the auctions and eventually held the respected position of Clerk.
He was an avid collector, expert and restorer of antiques, especially farm tools. He loved to discuss the daily news and books on WWII. His favorite activity however was mushroom hunting which he pursued with a passion. He was a World Class Mushroom Hunter and sadly did not reveal his favorite locations before passing.
His family will miss his dry sense of humor, quick witty replies, ginger hair, euchre skills, and thought provoking conversations.
Throughout his life Mark was member of the Shelby County Deer Hunter's Association and the National Rifle Association, and a strong supporter of the Second Amendment.
