Lynn A. Melick age 86 of Sidney passed away on Monday, January 15, 2024 at Landings of Sidney. He was born the son of Eugene and Eunice (Bailey) Melick on April 26, 1937 in Croton, Ohio.
Lynn is survived by his loving family children, Lyle (Ann) Melick of Eaton, Ohio and Brenda (Tom) Boss of Anna, Ohio, grandchildren Rev. John Melick (Dr. Eveleigh Wagner) of Franklin, Tennessee, Christy Melick of Eaton, Ohio, Dr. Betsy Melick of St. Charles, Missouri, Jessica (Jared) Crist of University Heights, Ohio, Ian Melick and Colin Melick both of Liberty Township, Ohio, Bailey Boss and Shelby Boss both of Anna, Ohio, siblings Doyle Melick of Langsville, Ohio, Leah (John) Graves and Phil (Damaris) Melick both of Boise, Idaho and daughter-in-law Marge Melick of Liberty Township, Ohio.
Lynn is preceded in death by his wife Virginia (Kincaid) Melick and a son Alan Melick.
Lynn grew up in Johnstown, Ohio, where he had a newspaper route and helped in his father’s hardware store. He was an active Boy Scout, earned the rank of Eagle Scout, was inducted into the Order of the Arrow, and attended an adventure camp in 1952 at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. During high school, he was in band and on the football team. Lynn sang in various choirs, was a thespian and played bugle for the morning flag raising at school in 1954. He helped his Aunt Gertrude drive her car cross country to San Mateo, California. Lynn graduated from Johnstown Monroe High School in 1955. Lynn met his future wife, Virginia, in high school. Their first date was to the Junior-Senior Banquet his senior year. They were married on August 31, 1958, just before Lynn’s senior year at Ohio Northern University where he studied Mechanical Engineering and graduated with a BSME in 1959. Lynn’s senior project was a design for a drill press. This design impressed one of his professors, who kept the drawings and showed them to his son, Lyle, in the 1980’s. Lynn worked at Cincinnati Milling Machine right after graduation, then at Robbins Engineering in Walled Lake, Michigan in 1962. In 1963, Lynn and Virginia moved to Sidney, Ohio where Lynn was employed at Monarch Machine Tool. It was here that Lynn worked for 40 years, designing high-quality, heavy-duty metal cutting lathes of various sizes. He was a Registered Professional Engineer in the state of Ohio and was a member of two American National Standards Institute (ANSI) committees; one on ball screws and one on lathe safety. Each time Lynn changed jobs, Lynn and Virginia traveled through Sidney, stopping at The Spot for food and drink, not knowing they would later settle in Sidney and raise their family.
