Joyce Ann Gates

JOYCE ANN GATES, 83, of Sidney, passed away at 8:10 A.M. Saturday, January 10, 2026 at Fair Haven County Home in Sidney. She was born on August 22, 1942 in Independence, Iowa, the daughter of the late Thorvald and Bessie (Gilson) Holst.

Joyce is survived by two children, Michael (Ellen) Windham, and Joanna Davis, both of Sidney; six grandchildren, Dustin (Lindsay) Cole, Jeremy (Marrisa) Davis, Joshua (Kelli) Davis, Brandon (Lauren) Windham, Braeden (Marcie Parker) Windham, and Brittany (Chad Martz) Martin; fourteen great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Lee (Betty) Holst of Sioux Falls, SD, and Marvin (Connie) Holst of Dunkerton, IA. She was preceded in death by one sister, Eva Applebee.

Joyce graduated from Independence High School in Independence, Iowa. Following high school, she attended college in Washington while working as a secretary for the United States Navy. After moving to Sidney, Joyce began her career with Copeland, where she dedicated more than 15 years of service. She later worked for NK Parts for about 8 years and most recently spent more than 10 years with Wal-Mart before retiring.

Joyce cherished time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren, and found great joy in baking cookies for them. She was a woman of Christian faith who believed deeply in helping others, generously supporting Hospice, local veterans, and St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Joyce was deeply loved and will be dearly missed.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, January 15, 2026 at 12 P.M. at Cromes-Edwards Funeral Home with Rev. Ronald Heath officiating. Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 10 A.M. until the time of service. Memorials may be made to Wilson Hospice Care in Joyce’s memory.
