JOAN (MEYER) BOLTZ, 93, of Sidney passed away Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at 9:35 AM at Wilson Health. She was born on March 6, 1931 in McCartyville, Ohio, the daughter of the late Charles and Cecelia (Prenger) Meyer.
She is survived by two children, Dr. Karyn Boltz of Powell and Dr. Kevin Walker Boltz of San Diego, CA and Manila, Philippines; two sisters-in-law, Florine Perkovich of Charlottesville, VA and Joaquine Jones of Seattle, WA and numerous nieces and nephews. Joan was preceded in death by husband, Kirby Boltz, brother, Elmer Meyer, two sisters, Helen Gusching and Marjorie Meyer, sister-in-law, Norma Meyer and brothers-in-law, Nagle Gusching and George Perkovich.
Mrs. Boltz attended McCartyville Grade School and was valedictorian of Anna High School. Joan graduated highest in her class from Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing in 1952 as an RN. She worked at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital of Los Angeles, where she helped open the first Recovery Room West of the Mississippi, Desert Hospital in Palm Springs, Wilson Memorial Hospital in Sidney where she worked 20 years as Head Nurse on the Med. -Surg. Units and Sunny Acres, Sidney, “now Shelby Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation” where she retired as MDS Coordinator. Her interest in improving care for patients resulted in helping charter in 1977 the West Central Ohio Ostomy Association, for which she served as secretary for some years. She volunteered at Compassionate Care of Shelby County and Elizabeth’s New Life Center in Sidney.
She was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church, participating in Women’s Altar-Rosary Society, Holy Angels Prayer Group and coordinator of the ministers who take daily Communion to Catholic Patients at Wilson Hospital. In addition to church and professional memberships, was passionate supporter of pro-life organizations including Shelby County Right to Life. When the Elizabeth New Life Center opened in 1983, she began as a volunteer and became office manager. Joan was a member of the Senior Center and Wilson Hospital Oldie-Goldies.
Education always had a high priority, both formal in the public and parochial systems, but also informal, encouraging the experienced to pass on their skill to the newer employees and to continue life-long learning. She participated in judging Science Fair Projects at Lehman High School and was a regular attendee at their musical programs. She assisted in evaluating nursing scholarship applications for Community Foundation. After retirement, traveling became an exciting means of continuing to learn about the world, its people and cultures.
Joan treasured time spent with family, from her children’s sports, music and scholastic activities, trips and vacations, to holiday celebrations email and long phone conversations. Working in her flower beds, watching the birds, following the Buckeye’s football, listening to e-books and sewing corn-bags to give away brought pleasure to her days. She appreciated God’s many blessings, which included having kind and helpful neighbors throughout the years.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday August 20, 2024 at 10:30 AM at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church with Fr. John W. Tonkin officiating. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Church Cemetery in McCartyville, Ohio. Friends may visit from 9:30 AM until 10:00 AM on Tuesday at the church or Monday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Cromes-Edwards Funeral Home 302 S. Main Ave Sidney. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holy Angels Soup Kitchen or Holy Angels St. Vincent de Paul Conference or Mercy Mission House in Joan’s memory.
