Obituary

JAMES IRWIN FREYTAG, age 92 of Sidney, passed away Sunday, December 27, 2020 at 5:25 AM at his home. He was born on April 6, 1928 in Fort Loramie, Ohio, the son of the late Edward and Ethel (Speckman) Freytag. On May 1, 1954 he married Virginia M. (Meyer) who preceded him in death December 15, 2003.

James is survived by nine children, Polly (Jerry) Day of St. Paris, Cindy (Rick) Schulze of Russia, Steve Freytag, Gregg (Beckie) Freytag, Peggy (Mike) Montgomery all of Sidney, Maria (Bob) Schulze of Anna, Anita Freytag, Andy (Sandi) Freytag both of Sidney, and Kurt (Troy Ann) Freytag of Anna, 23 grandchildren, Craig (Jeanette) Day, Kevin (Lindsey) Day, Nikki (Matt) Atterholt, Kristi (Joe) Purtee, Tommy Day, Matthew (Jenna) Day, Brian (Tracy) Schulze, Brad (Carrie) Schulze, Brent (Beth) Schulze, Stacie (Dave) Bettinger, Steven (Regina) Schulze, Brianne Schulze, Aubrey (Jason) Claunch, Amanda (Naveen) Montgomery-Jakhu, Erin Montgomery, Ryan (Anna) Montgomery, Danielle (Nate) Bollheimer, Michael Schulze, Erica Schulze, Zach Freytag, Alex Freytag, Emma Freytag, and Ethan Freytag, and 68 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Ann Marie Freytag, and three siblings, Paul Freytag, Mary Montague, and twin-brother Ed Freytag.

Mr. Freytag was a 1946 Fort Loramie High School graduate. He served his country in the National Guard and the US Army from 1949 to 1956. He attained his business degree from the University of Dayton, and worked as a self-employed life-long masonry contractor. He was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church, where he sang in the church choir, as well as the choir for Sacred Heart Catholic Church in McCartyville. He was also a member of the American Legion Singing Soldiers.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, December 31, 2020 at 10:30 AM at Holy Angels Catholic Church with Fr. Jarred Kohn officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will follow at Graceland Cemetery in Sidney. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 9 to 10 AM at Cromes-Edwards Funeral Home.
