J. Stephen Hubbell

J. STEPHEN HUBBELL, age 83 of Sidney, passed away Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at 5:43 PM at his home. He was born on December 8, 1941, in Bellefontaine, Ohio, the son of James and Mamie Jean (Farish) Hubbell. Following Mr. Hubbell’s death, when Stephen was a child, his mother married Dr. Paul Maurer, who stepped in as Dad.

On June 8, 1963, Stephen married Diane (Fultz) who survives along with their two daughters: Kathy (Steve) Cartwright, and Kelly (Deron) Barker both of Sidney, five grandchildren: Macey (Seth) Davis, Madison (fiancé’ Arya Sokansanj) Barker, Cole (Emily) Cartwright, Hayley, and Lauren Barker, three great-grandchildren: Foster and Wells Davis, and Sage Sokansanj, and two sisters-in-law: Sherry Hubbell of Sidney, and Linda Hubbell of Fountain City, IN. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Samuel and Mark Hubbell.

Stephen was a Sidney High School graduate. He then furthered his education, earning his bachelor’s degree from Ohio Northern University, where he was a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity, and his master’s degree from Michigan State University both in Civil Engineering. He retired in 1999 as Shelby County Engineer after 22 years of service.

Stephen was a lifetime member of Sidney Moose Lodge and Sidney Elks. He was also a member of the Piqua Country Club, Shelby Oaks Golf Club, and St. John’s Lutheran Church. Stephen was an avid fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes, Cincinnati Reds, and the Cleveland Browns. He also took great joy in taking his friends’ money after a good game of poker.

A Celebration of Stephen’s Life will be held at The Shelby Oaks Club on Sunday, December 7, 2025, from 1:30 to 3:30 PM. Arrangements are in the care of Cromes-Edwards Funeral Home.
