Douglas Edward Schmidt

Douglas E. Schmidt, 69, passed away on March 5, 2026, in Troy, OH. Doug was born in Sidney, OH on June 22, 1956, to parents Richard & Dorothy (Eilerman) Schmidt. At one time, Doug was part of 5 generations of living Schmidt family members.

Doug was a graduate of Lehman High School, where he had fond memories of being a member of the 1974 Class “A” state champion golf team. He furthered his education with a degree in journalism from Miami University.

At the time of his retirement, Doug was employed by Hydro in Sidney as a General Manager.

Throughout his life, Doug enjoyed participation in competitive sports activities. He was a multiple winner of the club championship at Shelby Oaks golf course, in addition to winning several Shelby County Open golf tournaments.

Doug’s hobbies included following Miami University athletic programs, investing in the stock market and playing poker with friends. During his healthier days, it was rare for Doug to turn down a seat in a good poker game.

His parents and a daughter, Amanda Etapa, preceded him in death.

Doug is survived by sister Bev (Tom) Simon, brother John (Amy) Schmidt, daughter Taylor, son-in-law Eddie Etapa, niece Allyson Schmidt and nephew Ryan Schmidt. Several grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive.

The family will host a Celebration of Life on Saturday, April 18, 2026, from 1-3:00 PM at Cromes-Edwards Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Ohio (Troy) Hospice or a charity of the donor’s choice.

The family would like to express their extreme gratitude to the staff at Wilson Health, Lima Memorial Hospital and Ohio Hospice for the support and comfort provided to Doug during his most recent illness.
