Dorothy Phelps Obituary

Dorothy Phelps received her promise of everlasting life in Christ in the early morning of December 31, 2020. Born to the late James and Maxine Kelly in LeJunior, Kentucky, on September 5, 1936.  She lived in Harlan County until 1956 when she and her husband, the late Johnnie Phelps, moved to Sidney, Ohio.

First and foremost, Dorothy loved and served the Lord.  She accepted Jesus as her personal savior as a very young girl.  She spent her life studying God's Word and living her life to honor Him.   She was a servant in many capacities as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher, Woman's Missionary Union leader, deacon's wife, and pianist.  She was a former member of Emmanuel Baptist, Faith Baptist Church, and First Baptist Church of Sidney. At about the age of eight, she met her one and only love, Johnnie Phelps.  They were married ten years later on September 4, 1954.  They were sweethearts and best friends, married for over fifty years until he passed in July 2012.  In their retirement, they enjoyed donating their time and talents to Ohio Baptist Builders where he donated carpentry skills and she her cooking skills in the building of new churches throughout the state.

She was truly a devoted mother and grandmother, "Mom-Mom and Mimes."   Cherishing her memory are her children Vicki and Roger Fulk of Sidney and John Christopher Phelps of DeGraff.  She was the proud grandmother of granddaughters Kati of Dayton, Sara of Boynton Beach, FL, and Emily of Columbus.  She is also survived by her brother, Harold Kelly, of Sidney; many nieces, nephews, friends and extended family.  Dorothy will be remembered for many things.  A wonderful cook and homemaker, one was always offered food or beverage when entering her home.  When you left, you left feeling like family.  She was an avid reader and writer.  She attended every event of her children and grandchildren, bursting with pride at their accomplishments until her health no longer allowed her to be present.  She retired from The Stolle Corporation.

The family would like to especially thank the loving and caring staff of Fair Haven County Home where Dot spent the last five years of her life.  They treated her as their own--quick with extra hugs, favorite foods, and FaceTime visits when face-to-face visits were no longer an option.  They held her hand and kissed her for us as she drifted peacefully away to heaven.

A celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, at 2 pm at Cromes-Edwards Funeral Home 302 S. Main Ave Sidney.  Burial will follow at Shelby Memory Gardens.  The family will receive friends on Wednesday at noon until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations for the purchase of Bibles may be made to The Gideons International-Shelby County Camp, PO Box 145, Sidney, Ohio.  Condolences may be expressed to the Phelps family at the funeral home's website, www.cromesfh.com.
