Obituary

Barbara Lou Echemann passed away peacefully at her home in Sidney on September 9, 2021 surround by her beloved husband and family.  She was born October 6, 1930, to Luella (Kennedy) and George Becker. On October 24, 1953, she married the Love of her Life Raphael Ambrose Echemann in Botkins, Ohio at Immaculate Conception Church.

Barbara graduated from Sidney Holy Angels High School in the class of 1948.   She graduated with a nursing degree from Mount St Josephs in Cincinnati and also attended St. Mary’s of the Woods College in Indiana. She worked as an emergency room nurse in Wilson Hospital in Sidney as well as being a nursing instructor at Miami Valley University Hospital.  She especially enjoyed the YMCA, serving on the Sidney YMCA board.  Barbara cared deeply about people and quietly provided for many local people in need.

Barbara was a hostess at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.  She loved California and treasured her years in Santa Barbara.  In their early years Barbara and Rafe taught many many kids to swim at the Sidney pool for the Red Cross. Barbara competed in the swimming masters program when she was sixty-five years old. She was always active, being an avid tennis player winning the city doubles in 1995.

A true renaissance woman Barbara obtained her pilots license in 1982 and owned many different planes. She and Rafe ended up with a Cessna T-210 aircraft that they used to commute to her beloved Santa Barbara, making many trips through the Great Rocky Mountains. She was a proud member of the Woman’s Pilot Assn., The Ninety Nines. Her husband and 3 sons are also Pilots.

She joined her husband in their businesses of Hemmert Outdoor Advertising and Interstate Displays being active in both. In addition, she was an accomplished pianist playing daily. When she was seventy-five she delighted her family and friends with a piano recital. Rafe and Barbara loved to travel and enjoyed visits to Africa, India, Hong Kong, Haiti, Europe, and repeatedly to their favorite Cabo San Lucas.

She loved her children and grandchildren very much.  She is survived by her children Thomas (Tami) of Sidney, Timothy (Mary Pat) of Piqua, and Patrick of Dayton, as well as her foster son Ignacio Arruza of Pembroke Pines, Florida.

Her grandchildren: Andrew (Cailyn) Echemann, Tricia (Benjamin) Randolph, Kelli (Breck) Echemann, Tina Echemann, Conrad Echemann and Lila Echemann and great grandchildren; Auden, Kinslee, Wally, Maeve, Weston, and Indigo.

Including her parents, she is preceded in death by her great granddaughter Amelia Randolph, by her brother William Becker (Thelma) of Botkins, her brother-in-law Robert Clune (Susan) and Robert Freytag (Anne), her sisters-in-law Sue Becker and Janet Becker and nieces Catherine Becker and Carol Becker.  Surviving in addition to her husband and children are her sister Susan Clune of Minster and brothers Thomas Becker of Anna, Ohio and David (Bonnie) Becker of Minster and sisters-in-law Anne Freytag, Eileen Myers, Janet Aselage and Roseann Lehmkulh

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am at Holy Angels Catholic Church, Sidney, Ohio on Thursday, September 16, 2021 with Fr. Aaron Hess, Celebrant.

Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Cromes-Edwards Funeral Home, Wednesday, September 15, 2021, from 4 to 7 P.M.
