We remember Shearl as a fellow teacher for Sidney City Schools and playing many tennis matches together back in the 80's. He was a good man who had a positive impact on his students. Our deepest sympathies to his family.

Today we honor and memorialize the life of one incredible, and truly unforgettable human being, Shearl Edler. Words cannot do justice to the selfless and compassionate way that this man moved through this world, inspiring all who felt his touch. I was one of the fortunate and know I was blessed that he was part of my history. My deepest condolences to all of the family, for this profound loss of one of the brightest lights to ever grace this earth.

Debbie, David and Michael, I am so sorry to hear about your Dad’s passing. I will always remember what a kind and encouraging teacher he was and how he personally helped me land my first writing job. He didn’t have to do that, but he did, and my life was forever changed by his act of kindness. That’s the kind of man he was. I also remember how funny he was and how much he loved to tell a good story. He sure could spin a yarn. Sometimes in life we cross paths with people who help us become more than what we were before. That’s how I feel about your Dad. It was a privilege to know him.

He was a special man in more ways than I can ever express. He instilled in me that my possibilities in life were unlimited, at a time that I believed that I had none. He encouraged me to read in what has become a life long passion, and gave me the tools to develop a great love of history. He could see things in students that they could never see in themselves and he gave them the tools to develop beyond their limited expectations. Ask just about any SHS student who their favorite teacher and Mr. Edler will be at the top of the list. He will be greatly missed but his wisdom will continue to inspire us.

My sincere sympathy to Shearl's family. He was not only one of my client's while I worked at the Razor Edge Barber Shop in Sidney, He was probably the best friend I have ever had!! I always looked forward to our 20 minute visits at the shop. Like everyone expresses in there tributes to him on this website, he was truly a good friend and a great man. He was well informed about a lot of subjects, he sometimes had an unexpected evaluation of some of the things that we talked about. On top of that, he had a fantastic sense of humor. Even when I would see him while out and about, after I quit cutting hair, he was the same great guy and always had a big smile. I had n't heard from him or saw him for a good while and was curious as to where he had gone. I have and will continue to miss my good friend, Shearl!

Dear family and friends, please accept my deepest condolences. May God's promises found at Acts 24:15 and Psalms 37:29 bring you comfort during this difficult time.

The Kempfers and Edlers were neighbors on Chestnut Avenue for many, many years. That friendship remained forever after the Edler's moved. Mr. Edler was so outgoing and such a common man. Always made me feel special whenever I saw him. My deepest sympathy to the Edler family.

I will miss this man FOREVER.

The earth just got a little dimmer, but didn't the Heaven's pick up a bright, special, sparkle.

Mr. Edler has just taken seat among the great writers, thinkers, TEACHERS, of all times. Imagine the discussions where he will play the one who injects a different point of view and lets everyone else hammer it out and write about it. He will then give you back your paper and say "RE-WRITE". I think that all of mine had that famous "red pen saying".

BUT YOU KNOW WHO ELSE IS AT THAT TABLE......"THE COMMON MAN" - THAT'S WHO HE WAS. A "special common man.

During the time I owned Creative Marketing Strategies in Sidney, our company had pleasure of working with Shearl to bring his book, “Never Let the Spirit Die” to life. He had misgivings at first and there were several starts and stops but it was finally completed and published. Working with him was a pure joy. Looking back, I am so glad I kept encouraging him to get the book in print because it will forever serve as a testimony to one of the finest educators ever to walk the halls of Sidney High School and Lehman. He made a difference. He made a contribution. He made people better for knowing him. He will be missed.

So very sorry to the Edler family for the loss of Shearl. He was my very first Spanish teacher. He sparked my passion for Spanish, and I then majored in Spanish. The greatest memory I have of him is getting to do my student teaching under him. What a wonderful human being, teacher, mentor and friend he was. He will always have a special place in my heart!

I love that photograph. There's so much that I want to say but I don't wish to dilute the true core of what I wish to convey. I'll suffice with the following. My hometown of Sidney was blessed to have the Edlers move there in 1955. I was fortunate that my life was touched by Shearl Edler and that his influence will continue. He and I both liked to quote our SHS fight song by saying, "Never let that spirit die." I'll miss this very special man.

From the time I was his paperboy on Brookburn Ave., to when he was my teacher at Lehman, and far, far beyond, Mr. Edler had a profound influence on my life. Always patient and understanding, he was a mentor, teacher and friend to me for decades - after launching me on a career in news that would last more than 30 years. The heavens are definitely singing today with the addition of one of the greatest, most genuine men I have had the pleasure of knowing.
