PHILIP WALTER MENZEL, 74, of Jackson Center passed away at 2:45 P.M., Thursday, November 7, 2019 at his home surrounded by family and friends. He was born on May 29, 1945 in Moline, Illinois, the son of the late Walter and Dorothy (Reske) Menzel. On December 13, 1969 Philip married the former Martha Jane Hoehner, who survives.
He is also survived by children, Michael (Kim) Menzel of Defiance, OH and Katherine (Ryan) Woolley of Jackson Center; brother, Roger (Sue) Menzel of Centreville, VA; and six grandchildren, Jacob, Zachary, Ashley, Lake, Emma, and Grant of Napoleon, OH.
Philip retired as the C.E.O. of the German Mutual Insurance Company in 2013. He served three years as First Lieutenant of the 82nd Airborne Division. Mr. Menzel was an active member of the American Legion, Rotary Club, the Delta Theta Phi Fraternity, and St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he served on the stewardship board. In Hudson, OH, Philip was an Elder at Gloria Dei for 18 years. He devoted time to his alma mater, Valparaiso University, as a member of the Alumni Advisory Board for the School of Business. Philip also established a scholarship endowment for the Valparaiso University School of Nursing.
