Lawrence Piper Obituary

LAWRENCE R. PIPER, age 93 of Anna, OH, passed away Sunday, December 9, 2018 at 2:42 AM at his home.

He was born January 20, 1925 in St. Marys, OH to the late Clyde and Lily Piper. On December 15, 1946 Piper married Marcella Christman, of Anna, who preceded him in death on December 11, 2003. They were married 57 years. Piper had a brother, Brooklyn, sisters, Ruth Lacy of Anna, Lily Piper of St. Marys, and a half sister, Lois Motter of Anna who preceded him in death.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews and his beloved cat of 16 years, Peanut.

In 1940 Piper moved to Anna and lived with Ruth and Roy Lacy.

During High School, he worked part time for Wentz's Chevrolet in Anna. Piper graduated from Anna High School in 1943. He enlisted in the military service after high school graduation, and served in the U.S. Army 65th Division under General George Patton (1943-1946).

From 1947-1956 he worked for the Ohio Department of Transportation. From 1956-1964 he owned and operated Piper's Garage in Anna. During the late 1950's he was Anna's Fire Chief. In 1964 Piper began a career as a U.S. Postal carrier and retired in 1989.

Piper had many hobbies, but most of all, he enjoyed spending time with Marcella, his relatives, and several close friends. He was a skilled trap shooter and for several years entered competitive shoots at the Grand American in Vandalia, OH, the Ohio State shoot, and others in Michigan and Indiana. He loved to work on his property doing pond management or cutting wood in his woods. He enjoyed wood working projects, and made ink pens for close friends, and toys made of wood for children that he knew, for Christmas.

Piper loved animals and he made a sizeable donation towards the building of the Shelby County Animal Shelter. He also made donations to the Anna Historical Society.

He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing during younger years. He also enjoyed, most days of the week, going to the Inn Between Restaurant and eating lunch with friends from the area.

He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and the Sidney American Legion Post 217.
