Donald L. Shatto

DONALD L. SHATTO, 89, of Sidney, passed away peacefully early Monday, November 27, 2017 after a short illness.  He was born on June 11, 1928 in Shelby County, Ohio, the son of the late Clifford and Helen (Given) Shatto. 

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Martha J. (Huelsmeyer) Shatto; son Steven (Wendy) Shatto, three grandchildren, Sarah Coyer and fiancé' Todd Scherer, Ian Shatto and fiancé' Avriel Altschul, and J. Blaine (Melissa) Helmlinger; six great-grandchildren, Aubrie and Kyrsten Coyer, Bryce Scherer, Evelyn and Eleanor Shatto, and Megan Helmlinger, all of Sidney; and sister, Loretta Stockstill of Waynesville, Ohio.

Donald was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ.  He graduated from Sidney High School with the class of 1946.  An avid sports fan, he played basketball in high school and bowled for many years in the Majors at Bel-Mar Lanes.  He was also recognized for never missing a Sidney High School Football home game for 50 years.  Since moving to their home on Broadway several years ago, he thoroughly enjoyed harassing the many golfers who would stop to chat with him on their way to the #9 Tee.  He retired in 1991 after 21 years from the City of Sidney Parks Department.  His "Claim to Fame" was his service as the 'Shelby County Weather Checker' for Dayton's Channel 2 for more than 30 years.  Nothing was more important to Donald than family.  He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be terribly missed. 

Funeral Services will be held Friday, December 1, 2017 at 1:00 PM at Cromes-Edwards Funeral Home, 302 S. Main Ave., with Pastor James Oates officiating.  Committal will follow at Graceland Cemetery.  The family will receive friends on Friday from 11:00 AM until the time of service.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Donald's memory.  Guestbook condolences may be expressed to the Shatto family at our website, www.cromesfh.com
