Clarence "Dutch" Carey

CLARENCE (DUTCH) CAREY, 97, of Sidney, passed away Thursday, August 10, 2017 at 8:50 PM at Grandview Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio. He was born on March 23, 1920, in Wapakoneta, Ohio, the son of the late Earl and Alma (Howell) Carey.
On June 3, 1944, he married the love of his life, Louise (Gaier) Carey at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sidney. Louise preceded him in death on July 10, 2012. They were married for 68 years.
He is survived by a daughter, Sharon (Fred) Nerderman. He is loved by nine granddaughters, Shelley (Brent) VanSkiver, Angie (Lyle) Bolin, Debbie Nerderman, Stephanie (Bill) Blosser, Amy (Sean) Powderly, Laura (Joe) White, Jenny (Matt) Davis, Kathy (Adam) Timmerman, Liz (Josh) Meyer. There are twenty-two great grandchildren, Jon and Emilee VanSkiver, Eva and Aden Bolin, Alex, Daniel, Lily and Anthony Blosser, Kayla (Tyler) Pelphrey, and Brad (Myracle) Blosser, Connor and Matthew Powderly, Zach, Carey and Elle White, Max and Wes Davis, Colin and Ethan Timmerman, Naomi, Faith and Edwin Meyer. He has one great-great grandson, Myles Blosser. Dutch was an incredible man. Family was the most important thing in his life. He loved family picnics and birthday parties, attending sporting events and holiday parties.
Dutch was preceded in death by three siblings, one brother, Leonard (Pete) Carey and his wife Helen, two sisters, Gertrude Vordemark and husband Jack, and Earlene Welnack.
He graduated from Sidney High School in 1938. He was very proud to be a member of the Yellow Jackets football team. He played right halfback, kicked and punted. He was Miami Valley first team and many newspaper articles said he had an "educated toe" that always made him smile.
Dutch was employed at Sidney Aluminum Products as a forman and salesman. Later the company was sold to ConMet,. where he worked in sales. He retired in 1980. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed traveling and playing cards.
Most of his married life he lived on Foraker Avenue. The last 3 1/2 years he lived with his daughter and son-in-law.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, August 17, 2017 at 10:30 AM at Holy Angels Catholic Church with Father Peter Langenkamp officiating. Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery in Sidney. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 4 to 7 PM and on Thursday from 9:30 to 10:15 AM at Cromes-Edwards Funeral Home, 302 S. Main Ave, Sidney.
